INTERIOR DESIGN FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN

Sarah Barnard designs homes, playrooms, sensory rooms, study spaces, and customized environments for autistic children, focusing on creating healing spaces that support mental, physical, and sensory wellbeing. As a WELL- and LEED-accredited designer, she uses a human-centered, trauma-informed process that prioritizes each child's unique needs. Barnard emphasizes a collaborative relationship with families and care providers, including occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists. Meetings and site visits are scheduled around family routines and nap schedules. Barnard’s team acts as an intermediary between contractors to enforce sensory-specific rules, such as prohibiting the use of fragrances during construction.

We are honored to share a letter from a family who collaborated with our studio to create a specialized environment tailored to their autistic child's unique needs.
